Green Schools

Our school has been awarded two green flags. The first was awarded for completion of the first theme “Litter Awareness”. For this theme we:
- did a litter survey in our school
- had a clean up day in the school and the main road outside the school
- wrote a green school motto
- improved our recycling facilities, leading to us getting a second recycling wheelie bin
Our Green School motto:
Don’t be a fool,
Clean our school,
Recycle,
Be cool!
For our second second green flag the theme was energy awareness. The Board of Management switched our electricity supply to Airtricity and then found a leak in the heating system which was fixed. That leak was costing us money in big oil bills! The Department of Education gave us grants to insulate the school and to replace some old windows.
We have an action plan that hopes to improve our electricity and oil consumption. We decided to:
- have a “Switch it Off” policy where we turn off lights and machines when not needed
- monitor electricity and oil bills (interview treasurer of BoM)
- monitor the times the heating is on during winter and summer
- write a new motto for energy awareness
- check all the seals and draught excluders
- learn more about energy saving
- put up notices around the school reminding people about energy waste
- teach other people (at home) about energy saving
Mrs Hazel Wilson is the Liaison teacher working with the Green School Committee. Work begins in September 2014 on our third green flag and the next theme will be water conservation.
Hoisting our first green flag!
